How to Stand Out and Lead From the Floor Up
Most people think leadership is about barking orders and hitting numbers. But the truth is, great leaders inspire teams, solve real problems, and keep operations moving under pressure. After 20+ years in the game, here are the five traits I’ve seen in the best of the best.
🔹 Trait #1: They Lead by Example
I’ll never forget the most successful startup I was part of, an Ohio facility where the General Manager set the tone from day one. When the first truck arrived, he wasn’t posing for photos or giving orders, he was right there, breaking down pallets and inducting freight with the team.
When your team sees leadership roll up their sleeves, they follow. That moment built instant respect. As leaders, we learned every role hands-on and became Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) ourselves. It made us better problem-solvers and more relatable to our teams. That same GM also taught us to connect with associates on a personal level.
Leadership isn’t about titles, it’s about action.
🔹 Trait #2: They’re Clear Communicators
Clear expectations = fewer mistakes. A great leader makes sure everyone knows the goal, the process, and their role in it.
One of the biggest mistakes I see in leadership communication is listening. In The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey warns about “listening with the intent to respond” and he’s right. If you’re focused on what to say next, you’re not truly hearing what’s being said.
Great leaders listen to understand, not just to reply.
🔹 Trait #3: They Stay Calm Under Pressure
The supply chain world is chaotic by nature. Equipment breaks, systems go down, trucks back up, but the leader can’t panic. If the leader’s flustered, the team will be too.
The best leaders manage pressure with clarity and control. They have contingency plans, they stay solution-focused, and they protect team morale by staying steady.
Chaos spreads, but so does confidence.
🔹 Trait #4: They Develop People
I once had a director who asked every candidate for promotion:
“Who’s ready to take your place?”
If they didn’t have an answer, the interview ended right there.
The best leaders are always growing others. Not just to fill roles, but to create a stronger, more self-sufficient team. And to develop others, you must grow yourself. A mentor once told me:
“You can’t fill someone else’s bucket if you’re never filling your own.”
Invest in your growth so you can invest in theirs.
🔹 Trait #5: They Own Their Results
A GM once told me,
“I’m more forgiving than the Pope, if you just admit your mistake.”
That stuck. The best leaders own their failures, learn from them, and show accountability, not blame. But they also give credit where it’s due. Publicly thanking your team for winning goes a long way in building trust and loyalty.
Own the bad, share the good. That’s leadership.
🔚 Final Thoughts
Being a great leader isn’t about holding the title, it’s about living these traits every single day. Whether you’re leading a team of 5 or 500, these principles don’t change. Master them, and you’ll stand out for the right reasons.
